James Hill > A bunch of multicolored grapes.

Same bunch as last week, shot at roughly the same angle and time of day, but with a totally different look. I don't know if this bunch will make it through another session. : )

I also updated yesterday's shot with an answer. Dirkster guessed correctly.

This guy will be a part of dinner Monday night - a few of his older brothers made the table tonight.. Anyone care to guess what it is?

Edit: Yes, it's a yellow squash blossom. I learned just recently that they are not only edible, but very delicious, also. This was shot with my 70-200 and a 36 mm extension tube. I put another example in My Neighbor's Garden gallery.
James Hill > July 7, 2009 - Look who came to dinner.

It's been a little over three weeks since I've taken any pictures of my local deer. I started to make up an entertaining story about stalking this guy for the entirety of those three weeks, enduring all kinds of hardships and foul weather, while nursing a bum leg and broken equipment, just to catch up with him at the perfect moment. But that would be dishonest, and you guys would probably see right through my thinly veiled lie, so I'll just tell you the truth. This guy walked up while I was eating dinner and just stood in front of the cabin, apparently waiting for me to notice all the new antler growth he's put on in three weeks. I humored him by getting up from the chair, walking to the front door, and shooting his portrait through the screen door.

I haven't been feeding the deer but, I think if I start, I could probably get them accustomed to coming up on the porch, and then eventually right inside the living room. Then I won't even need to get up from my chair to take another "growth" portrait. : )

Note: Files for poster size prints are available but are strongly discouraged due to the softness in the image, aggressive cropping, high ISO, poor lighting, and the simple fact that it's just a deer. :D

What a great night for softball. The weather was perfect and the two teams were perfectly matched. So well matched that, after the first game, they played again to decide the winner of a previous 9 to 9 tie between the two teams. Both the full length game and the shorter extra innings turned into a high energy slug-fest, with almost non-stop action. The girls were pumped and really getting into it, which made it a whole lot-o-fun to shoot. I think I shot more fielding plays tonight than I have the rest of the season. This is a shot of my niece in catcher's gear, and Tori, another girl who always has the throttle wide open. I thought for a second the two were going to collide going for this short hit, but Tori pulled up short and launched herself skyward just as I was pressing the shutter. They won both matches. :)

I added a small gallery with shots from one of the older girl's teams, for anyone interested in more action shots. The older girls certainly move a lot faster and kick up quite a bit more dust. There's not a lot in there just yet, as I was only recently asked to shoot a few action shots for someone on that team, but their electric green and reflective uniforms are quite the sight.
James Hill > Another member of the expectant deer population around the cabin. I've named this one Hobbles. She has an injured hind leg on her right side, which she doesn't put any pressure on while standing or walking, but otherwise appears to be pretty healthy. I first noticed her coming around a few days ago and I'm guessing she has made camp by the little stream not far through the woods. There she has plenty of cover and no fences to cross, and of course all the clover she can eat just a few yards away. She was browsing in my front yard last night when I got home and casually walked off a short distance as I pulled in. I sat and watched her for a few minutes and then took a few shots before getting out of the car. Still no luck with seeing any fawns. I'm almost positive the big doe has dropped hers, because I've seen her and she looked pretty trim compared to before. She's just keeping them well hidden from me for some reason.

Hobbles again, three days later.

A bunch of multicolored grapes.

Same bunch as last week, shot at roughly the same angle and time of day, but with a totally different look. I don't know if this bunch will make it through another session. : )

I also updated yesterday's shot with an answer. Dirkster guessed correctly.
