James Hill > Vertigo, anyone?

Trying to break out of the norm and see things from a new perspective.
This is a relatively new pedestrian bridge that crosses the Eno River and leads into the city park where all of my festival shots have come from. This was the first time I crossed this bridge so I wanted to capture a few photos to mark the occasion. Not content with a straight-on approach, I wondered what it would look like if I hung upside down from the top. It probably goes without saying, but it was much harder to compose a decent shot than I expected. ;-)

Edit: It seems many have missed my little winkie there at the end. I did NOT actually hang from the top. I just wondered what it would look like if I had. The difficulty was in getting the comp I wanted to make the shot look convincing. This was shot standing on my own two feet, then the image was flipped in post. While trying to compose this I was wishing for an inverted view, like the old view cameras.
James Hill > 2009-Eno Festival-0458

Boo Hanks performing on the Chimney Corner stage at this year's Festival for the Eno. Boo recorded his first album a couple years ago at the age of 79, after playing for only friends and family most of his life. He currently tours with the Music Maker Relief Foundation and has a couple songs on his myspace page, for any interested in hearing his soft voice and impressive Piedmont Blues style guitar work.

The gentleman looking on in the background is his friend and driving companion, who helps Boo get around to all of his gigs. He looked a little uncertain if he should move when I first raised my camera, I'm glad he stayed put.
James Hill > 2009-Eno Festival-1737

Well, I said yesterday I was putting up a banjo shot today. I didn't realize when I made that statement that I didn't really have a good banjo shot from this year's event. So I'll post an okay shot of Joe Newberry playing banjo and making faces at Mike Craver while playing with The Ramblers, three members of the original Red Clay Ramblers.

I hope that one day before I die I get to see and shoot a music venue where microphones and their accompanying stands simply don't exist. ;-)
James Hill > 2009-Eno Festival-1160

Hehe. I put up the cigar box guitar last night and I'll put a banjo tomorrow and then this kid will forever be surrounded by banjo music in my daily gallery.

For anyone not familiar with the reference the tee shirt makes, it is from a scene in the 1972 movie Deliverance. A thought provoking and disturbing film which the memory of sparks fear in some folks whenever they hear dueling banjos.

Edit: The shirt here is a staff shirt for a local paddling outfitter, Frog Hollow Outdoors, which is run by a great group of folks. They do everything from simple canoe/kayak rentals and guided moonlight paddles, to full blown overnight trips at some really amazing locations. I've been on a moonlight paddle and a weekend getaway to Lake Jocassee with them and had a wonderful time both times. So if you're looking for a paddling guide or rental in the Triangle area of NC, give their website a visit.
James Hill > 2009-Eno Festival-0784

Peter Holsapple playing his cigar box guitar. One of the nicest looking cigar box guitars I've ever seen.

Interesting tid-bit from the linked wikipedia page: Cigars were extremely popular in the 19th Century, and therefore, many empty cigar boxes would be lying around the house. The earliest proof of a cigar box instrument found so far is an etching of two Civil War Soldiers at a campsite with one playing a cigar box fiddle. The etching was created by French artist Edwin Forbes who worked as an official artist for the Union Army.
James Hill > What is the key to good music photography?(asked by James Sharpe in this ePHOTOzine article while interviewing Stuart Leech, a UK music photographer who's work I've admired since reading that particular article last summer.)Stuart's answer:"I think getting a different perspective is important, when you're in a pit with twenty other photographers you've got to make your images stand out."

I generally don't shoot events large enough to have a "pit" and I'm usually only surrounded by a few other "photographers" with their camera phones held high, but I do try to see things from a different perspective most of the time. I guess I'll have to leave it up to others as to whether my music photography actually stands out, but I did like this shot an awful lot. ;-)
James Hill > July 7, 2009 - Look who came to dinner.

It's been a little over three weeks since I've taken any pictures of my local deer. I started to make up an entertaining story about stalking this guy for the entirety of those three weeks, enduring all kinds of hardships and foul weather, while nursing a bum leg and broken equipment, just to catch up with him at the perfect moment. But that would be dishonest, and you guys would probably see right through my thinly veiled lie, so I'll just tell you the truth. This guy walked up while I was eating dinner and just stood in front of the cabin, apparently waiting for me to notice all the new antler growth he's put on in three weeks. I humored him by getting up from the chair, walking to the front door, and shooting his portrait through the screen door.

I haven't been feeding the deer but, I think if I start, I could probably get them accustomed to coming up on the porch, and then eventually right inside the living room. Then I won't even need to get up from my chair to take another "growth" portrait. : )

Note: Files for poster size prints are available but are strongly discouraged due to the softness in the image, aggressive cropping, high ISO, poor lighting, and the simple fact that it's just a deer. :D
James Hill > George Sings the Blues

80 year old George Higgs performing on the Grove Stage at the 2009 Festival for the Eno. Link goes to new gallery, not yet filled but working on it.
James Hill > Extremely Rare Animals (only one of each has ever been captured on film (or pixels))

I managed to sneak up on these two fascinating creatures at the Festival for the Eno this weekend. The big one in front is a tiger (it even says so on the sign) and the one in back is a pterodactyl, or more properly a Pterosaur, at least according to wikipedia. (the Ps are silent, so why are they even there?) I was extremely fortunate to stumble upon these wild creatures, as NC is not a place known for rusty big cats or metallic raptors. Just imagine how my heart raced as I stalked these two, maneuvering to within mere feet (and inches) for this shot. I thought for sure I would be attacked, possibly requiring a band-aid (TM) or worse, a tetanus shot.

I found a neighbor and friend of mine (who happens to be a metal sculptor) lounging nearby. Daniel Mathewson, who is a really nice guy (although a little twisted) appeared to be VERY knowledgeable about the history and habits of both creatures.
James Hill > Albannach

Albannach rocked the Meadow Stage today at the Festival for the Eno. They are a Scottish 'Pipes & Drums' band, with attitude. The first show at 1:00 was fantastic, and it drew a big crowd. But the second performance at 3:15 was absolutely jaw-dropping. Their performance is so high-energy that even the best shots I managed to get of them simply don't do their performance justice. This one did stand out as an easy favorite. I'll add a gallery link later, once I find some time to edit. There's still one more day of music and fun to shoot, and then I'll start sifting through the backlog.

I also ran into a fellow SmugMug buddie at the festival, Laura S. Hi, Laura! I can't wait to see some of the shots you came away with. I planned to but failed to get a shot of you, shooting something or someone else. You blended in with the crowd too well for me to find you again. : )
James Hill > "Not a Ken & Barbie Event" - (Alternate = "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Grill"**) **With NO apologies to Billy Ocean.

I shot 701 images today so I have a lot to choose from (and edit) from day one of a three day music festival. This just happens to be the first shot I took today and it also happens to make me laugh, so here it is, my daily photo. This music festival attracts a pretty diverse group of people but, the whole event is centered around raising money and awareness to protect land adjacent to one of our local rivers, so the largest majority of folks who attend, volunteer, and work the event are what some would call "a little earthy." (A term I myself find endearing, since I've been known to hug a few trees.) One great thing about these people is their wonderful sense of humor and habit of voicing their opinions, political and otherwise, on their vehicels. The participant/volunteer parking lot was full of statements from some pretty creative individuals. This one in particular struck me as funny because every year, despite this event always taking place in a NATURE PARK along the banks of a river, I always manage to see Ken and Barbie walking around in Italian loafers and high heels. Usually complaining about the dust or mud ruining their shoes, or perhaps wondering why no one else is wearing white pants. : )

PLEASE NOTE - Larger file is available for POSTER prints, but not recommended for parents with small children.
James Hill > It's still hot, and I didn't shoot anything today, so this is another shot from the archives. And in an ultimate showing of laziness, I'm pulling it straight from one of my first galleries uploaded to Smugmug. One more day until I'll have lots of new festival and river photos to choose from.
James Hill > “What makes a river so restful to people is that it doesn't have any doubt - it is sure to get where it is going, and it doesn't want to go anywhere else.” -- Hal Boyle
James Hill > Sunset #14,610
James Hill > Safe! And it wasn't even close...

Ok, fair play is fair play. I posted another shot at the beginning of the season where a bad call was made against my nephew's team and I had photo evidence to dispute the call. It just so happens that their last game of the season was against that same team... and another bad call was made, but this time it was in favor of my nephew's team. I felt it was only fair to show my photo evidence this time too. Here is my nephew about to catch a ball, which clearly hasn't arrived yet, for which the umpire called the base runner out. Some days even a bad call in your favor is still a really bad call.
